Happy Friday all of you busy writers out there! I hope you haven't been scorched by a heat wave like we've had here in good ol' NC!
I know most of you reading this blog know about me and my family, but perhaps some of you are reading for the first time. If you don't already know, I have four children from ages 10 to 15. I didn't get to start my writing career until 7 years ago, so me and my "Writer of the Week" have quite a bit in common.
Rose Fresquez is also a mother of four and writer. Check out her interview below to find out what she had to say in answer to my questions.
AJ: Thank you for joining me in this interview today! Please tell us a little about yourself and your background that led you to become a writer.
RF: My Name is Rose Fresquez. I am a wife and mother of 4 beautiful kids. When I wrote my first book "The Ten Commandments for Kids and Families, I wanted to go through the Ten Commandments with my kids, but I thought it would be enjoyable if I added some activities and I also wanted to share it with the rest of the world that might need to use it for their families. Thanks for Indie Publishing, where I paid a very minimal fee, it enabled me to make the print happen. After my first book, I was motivated to keep writing if I could share my work
AJ: How many books have you written and in what genre would you classify your works?
RF: I have written three books. Two of them, are family devotionals. The Ten Commandments for kids and Families, and the other one is; Signed and Delivered. Letters from God. My upcoming book is my first fictional novel. "FIRST SITE" It's a romance story, that takes place in the beautiful outdoors. I am also working on a series of short stories that take place in a small town in the foothills of Colorado.
AJ: Tell us a little about your writing process. Do you work from an outline, or do you prefer to see where the story leads you?
RF: I am not much of a planner and I prefer to see where the story leads me.
Right now, it's a hobby, that could turn into a career in the near future.
AJ: Do you see writing as a career? Or, is this just a hobby?
RF: At the moment, I use writing as a hobby, which could be turned into a career in the near future.
AJ: What is the most challenging thing you’ve found in being a writer?
RF: I think for me, the most challenging thing I've found being a mom and wife, I find it hard to have free time for writing. Most of the time I do it at night after everybody goes to bed. Which interrupts my bedtime.
The other challenge is marketing. With so many established authors, it's hard for new authors to push their way up without having to invest in advertising. And that can be a big challenge in terms of cost when you're a new author.
AJ: Does your inspiration come from real life or is it purely fictional?
RF: My inspirational comes from day today lifestyles which I weave into a fiction aspect.
AJ: What do you see as the main benefit of being an indie author (or a traditionally published author, if that applies to you) and what advice would you give to someone who is just starting out?
RF: The main benefit of being an indie author is that I get to make my own deadline, and it's cost-effective. For someone who's just starting out, I advice using Indie to create a platform at very minimal to no cost. It enables beginner authors an opportunity to turn their publishing dreams into reality. Go for it.
However, after my novel, I realized there's more work in the editing process. After making an outline for my future novel, I think I will go the outline route, to make the writing and editing process much easier.
